In the Heart of an Athlete

Every year, student-athletes like Dennis “DJ” Price Jr. train, compete, and dream—unaware they may be living with an undiagnosed heart condition. Our In the Heart of an Athlete initiative was created in DJ’s honor to prevent another promising life from being lost to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) and other heart-related conditions. 

 

Why This Matters 

 

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy is a treatable but often undetected heart condition. Many student-athletes undergo standard physicals, but these may not include the screenings needed to catch life-threatening risks. 

 

We believe every athlete deserves access to early detection and life-saving information. 

 

What We Do 

 

In the Heart of an Athlete brings together education, access, and advocacy: 

• Educational Workshops 
  We host sessions for parents, coaches, and students to raise awareness about HCM and other cardiac conditions. 

• Free & Low-Cost Cardiovascular Screenings 
  Partnering with schools, clinics, and medical professionals to bring screenings directly to student-athletes. 

• Community Events 
  Featuring local athletes, health professionals, and stories of impact to elevate the importance of heart health in youth sports. 

• Print & Digital Resources 
  Providing schools, teams, and families with easy-to-understand guides on symptoms, testing, and next steps.
